Dark Horizons History

    1992

  • Dark Horizons starts as The Underground Cirus - Dark Horizons edition on WMNF, located in Tampa, Florida. While the Monday night Underground Circus had been broadcasting on the airwaves for a couple of years, this was the first show where the name "Dark Horizons" was used. This 2 hour music show focused on the newest Gothic/Industrial/Electronic music, as well as Punk and College Rock.
  • 1995

  • The Underground Circus fades away and leaves Dark Horizons standing on its own as the leader in Gothic and Industrial music on the radio.
  • 1998

  • Dark Horizons changes the format and begins to play Gothic/Industrial/Electronic exclusively.
  • The Coffin Classic is introduced, giving Dark Horizons an outlet to play a song that was over 10 years old, once a week.
  • Dark Horizons moves to Thursday nights from 11PM-2AM.
  • 2001

  • Dark Horizons enters the Digital Age with its first web presence.
  • 2003

  • Program changes at WMNF moves Dark Horizons to the "Prime Time" slot from 9-11PM on Thursdays.
  • Two new features added to the show to enhance listener participation: Theresa's Silly Question and The Netherworld News.
  • 2005

  • Podcasting added to allow greater listening audience. No longer having to listen live, listenership expanded quickly.
  • 2007

  • Online playlists added to the website, allowing listeners to search through all the music played on the show.
  • 2009

  • After being on WMNF for 16 years, Dark Horizons left the station and started broadcasting the live 2 hour show solely over the Internet on January 1, 2009.
  • On March 5, 2009 the show was extended to 3 hours, as it was before 2003.
  • In August 2009, Dark Horizons adds an additional, once-a-month show on Saturday featuring the music that no longer fits the 6 month ("All things were new once") format that has kept the show on the cutting edge of the music scene for the last 17 years.
